Carbon Markets Africa

Following the success of last year’s event, the third Carbon Markets Africa conference being held in Cape Town between 10th to 11th November will showcase current Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) business opportunities in Africa and will look to establish Africa’s path to generating a robust and sizeable carbon market. In the global context, Africa is significantly under-represented in the generation of CERs (Certified Emission Reduction credits), especially compared with Asia.

According to the UNFCCC, the continent has less than 3% of CDM projects across the globe. These facts make for disappointing reading and, with international negotiations gathering pace, Africa now needs to take ownership of the future of its carbon markets. Africa’s budding market needs support, infrastructure and investment to reach its full capacity, as well as a clear understanding of how carbon can complement business strategies and play a part in new business models.

“Carbon Markets Africa is seen as one of the main carbon events on the continent and is certainly timely just before Copenhagen.”
