Every year since 1972 , June 5th has been celebrated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as World Environment Day (WED). Through WED, the UN is able to give a human face to environmental issues and enable people to realize not only their responsibility, but also their power to become agents for change in support of sustainable and equitable development. Here UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner encourages participation in World Environment Day at a local level and highlights the need for a Green Economy approach to address the missing links in the sustainability agenda, including particularly the need to preserve biodiversity for the benefit of us all.
